65 yr man with chronic facial pain condition undergoes successful procedure

Chandigarh: A 65-year-old man, living with an intense facial pain every day for nearly a decade was treated successfully at Max Super Speciality Hospital recently.
The patient was battling severe right-sided facial pain for 7-8 years, a condition known as trigeminal neuralgia. Despite trying various treatments, including medications, the pain became increasingly unbearable over the past year.
After thorough evaluation, including advanced imaging, doctors at Max identified the root cause of the problem which was compression of the fifth cranial nerve by a blood vessel in the brain.
Recognizing the severity and persistence of the pain, surgical intervention was recommended.
Dr. Gaurav Sharma, neurosurgeon at Max Super Speciality Hospital,Bathinda said that the patient underwent a successful procedure, right retro mastoid craniotomy with micro vascular decompression of the fifth nerve, aimed to alleviate the pressure on the affected nerve.
Following the surgery, the patient experienced a remarkable improvement in his condition. He was discharged just five days later, free from the excruciating pain that had plagued him for years.
Dr. Gaurav said ,” Living with chronic pain can be incredibly debilitating, impacting every aspect of a person's life," said. We are happy to have been able to provide relief to this patient and improve his quality of life."
Meanwhile trigeminal neuralgia affects thousands of individuals worldwide, causing severe facial pain that can be triggered by simple activities like eating or talking. While medication can help manage the symptoms for some, surgical intervention becomes necessary for others when the pain becomes refractory to treatment.
