Kochhar, Director, Gastroenterology at Paras Health Panchkula said that Hepatitis B and C are predominantly transmitted via contaminated blood, body secretions and unsafe sexual contact whereas hepatitis A and E spread through contaminated water and food.
Hepatitis A and E lead to acute self-limiting illness in the form of fever, jaundice and deranged liver function tests in more than 90% cases, however a small proportion may develop a more severe form such as acute liver failure, he maintained.
Dr Rajan Mittal, Consultant Gastroenterology said,” Persons who have immune weakness, pregnant females, pre-existing liver or other systemic disease are at higher risk of more severe disease.”
Management is primarily supportive such as maintaining adequate diet and hydration. Home based food is advisable with sufficient calorie intake. Unproven drugs/supplements can sometimes lead to more severe and prolonged illness and should be avoided, informed Dr Saurabh Mishra Consultant Gastroenterology.
Dr Mohnish Kataria Consultant Gastroenterology said,” Maintaining hand hygiene, eating well-cooked home-based food and drinking clean water helps in prevention and limits the spread of acute viral hepatitis A and E both.”
