Patiala, April 30: To create awareness on osteoarthritis and recent advances in robotic knee resurfacing, a team Park Hospital including Dr Bhanu Pratap Singh, director orthopedics and robotic joint replacement surgery and Dr Saurabh Garg and Dr Malwinder Singh both consultant ortho addressed a press conference here on Wednesday.
Dr Bhanu Pratap Singh said, “Worldwide, osteoarthritis rate is high in India. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis, affecting millions of people worldwide. It happens when the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of the bones wears down over time. Although osteoarthritis can damage any joint, the condition most commonly affects joints in the hands, knees, hips and spine.”
He further said that we have completed 150 plus successful robotic knee replacements surgeries at Park Hospital Mohali. Under Park Mahotsav, we are offering free robotic technology to our patients till May end. This initiative aims to make advanced healthcare accessible to every section of society, he maintained.
Worldwide, osteoarthritis rate is high in India, informed Dr Bhanu Pratap.
Dr Malwinder Singh said, “The number of knee replacement surgeries is increasing day by day in India. If we look at the statistics, every year more than 2.5 million people undergo this procedure in India. Total knee replacement involves placing metal implants in the knee area to recreate the joint surface. The procedure is overwhelmingly successful in India and people with severe knee problems are advised to undergo this surgery to remain mobile.”
Dr Saurabh Garg shared that post Covid, there is a sizable surge in the number of patients with hip problems. While the majority of patients of AVN can be treated with minor surgical procedures, few of them might need total hip replacement, he said.
