New Delhi | July 2026:As thousands of NEET-qualified Indian students prepare to begin their medical journey this year, Uzbekistan has emerged as one of the most promising destinations for pursuing MBBS abroad. With nearly 16,000 Indian students currently studying medicine in the country, improved academic standards, enhanced clinical training and strong cooperation between the Governments of India and Uzbekistan are creating renewed confidence among students and parents.
Reaffirming its commitment to the welfare of Indian students, the Embassy of India in Tashkent has stated that it is working closely with the Government of Uzbekistan and leading medical universities to ensure compliance with the Foreign Medical Graduate Licentiate (FMGL) Regulations, 2021 prescribed by the National Medical Commission (NMC).
The Embassy has clarified that the NMC Alert Note dated 1 April 2026 is advisory in nature and aims to encourage students to choose only FMGL-compliant medical universities while making informed decisions through official sources. It has further emphasized that continuous efforts are being made to strengthen English-medium instruction, improve clinical exposure, internship standards and overall academic quality in accordance with NMC requirements.
To help Indian students make informed choices, the Embassy has also published detailed Guidelines for Indian Students Seeking Admission in Uzbek Medical Institutions, providing comprehensive information regarding recognised universities, admission procedures, FMGL compliance and academic requirements.
According to the Embassy of India, approximately 16,000 Indian students are currently studying in Uzbekistan. The Embassy has identified the following medical institutions as the principal universities where Indian students are enrolled:
* Andijan State Medical Institute
* Bukhara State Medical Institute
* Samarkand State Medical University
* Tashkent State Medical University (including Termez branches)
* Tashkent Pharmaceutical Institute
* Urgench State Medical Institute
* Ferghana Medical Institute of Public Health
* Karakalpakstan Medical Institute
These institutions continue to attract Indian students because of their government status, affordable tuition fees, English-medium education, expanding clinical exposure and continuous academic reforms.
Adding further confidence for prospective students, the FMGE December 2025 results highlighted the remarkable progress of medical education in Uzbekistan. According to the published country-wise results, Uzbekistan recorded the highest pass percentage among the major overseas MBBS destinations, with approximately 42% of candidates successfully qualifying the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE). This achievement reflects the steady improvement in teaching quality, clinical training and academic standards across recognised medical universities.
Education experts believe these developments demonstrate Uzbekistan’s growing commitment to providing internationally accepted medical education aligned with Indian regulatory requirements. The increasing academic cooperation between India and Uzbekistan is expected to further strengthen medical education opportunities for Indian students in the years ahead.
Meanwhile, a representation has also been submitted by a group of Indian students to the Haryana Medical Council seeking clarification regarding its recent advisory. Students have expressed confidence that constructive dialogue between regulatory authorities will provide greater clarity and reassurance for existing and prospective students.
The Embassy has once again advised students and parents to rely only on official information, verify the FMGL compliance of universities before taking admission and avoid misinformation circulated through unofficial sources.
