Around 50% heart attack in India occur under 50 years of age, 25% in under 40 years: Dr HS Bedi

Chandigarh, September 26: A team from Park Hospital, Mohali including Dr HS Bedi chairman cardio thoracic & vascular surgery, Dr Sachin Bansal, consultant cardiologist and Dr Priyanka Goel consultant cardiac anesthesia and Dr Rohit Jaswal CEO addressed a press conference on rising trend of heart disease among young Indians here on Friday.
Park Hospitals is North India’s biggest super specialty hospital network with 19 hospitals, 3500 beds, 800 ICU beds, 14 cath labs, 45 modular OTs and over 1000 doctors.

Dr Sachin Bansal said that this year's World Heart Day theme ‘Don't Miss a Beat’ encourages individuals to be proactive and vigilant about their heart health by not ignoring warning signs, getting regular check-ups, and maintaining a heart-healthy lifestyle. It emphasizes that consistent care and attention to cardiovascular well-being can prevent premature deaths and improve overall health. India accounts for 60 % of the world's heart disease burden, despite having less than 20 percent of the global population.”
Dr Priyanka Goel said, “In India, heart ailments have replaced communicable diseases as the biggest killer. According to recent data, approximately 30 percent of the urban population and 15 percent of the population living in rural areas suffer from high blood pressure and heart attacks. As the risk factors of heart ailments increase, so does the mortality rate.
Dr Rohit Jaswal, CEO Park Hospital said that patients with type 2 diabetes have 2-3 times higher risk of heart problems as compared to general population. There are currently 100 million people with diabetes in India, and this number is expected to increase to 135 million by 2035.
