Cafeteria Licensee Goes to Court Against CLTA & Sports Department

Chandigarh, May 6, 2025: Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association (CLTA) and Sports Department, Chandigarh Administration are in legal trouble. A civil suit (C.S. No. of 2025) has been filed by Geeta Kapoor, a resident of Sector 26, Chandigarh, before the Hon’ble Civil Judge, Chandigarh, seeking a permanent injunction against the CLTA and the Director Sports, Chandigarh Administration. Summons have been issued to both CLTA and Director Sports, Chandigarh (UT).

Kapoor, who has been operating a cafeteria on the CLTA premises in Sector 10 since 2021 under valid license agreements, has alleged that the defendants are attempting to illegally evict her and sublet the premises to third parties without her consent—actions which she claims are in clear violation of the binding agreement.

In her petition, Kapoor states that despite fully complying with all contractual obligations, including timely payment of license fees and utility bills, she received a sudden notice from CLTA dated April 6, 2025, directing her to vacate the premises by May 6, 2025. The notice, allegedly based on a memo from the Sports Department, provides no clear justification and fails to attach any copy of the said memo despite repeated requests.

The suit also highlights that the closure would jeopardize the livelihoods of her employees and severely impact her lawful business operations. A formal representation has already been submitted to the Secretary, Sports, Chandigarh Administration, seeking intervention.

In addition to a permanent injunction, the Plaintiff has sought interim relief to restrain the defendants from taking any coercive steps such as shutting down the cafeteria or handing over possession to third parties while the matter is under consideration.

The matter is slated to come up for hearing soon.
