Chandigarh: For the first time in the city, a community meet-up for persons affected by Cerebral Palsy (CP) is being organized. The event is being hosted by the Bengaluru-based disability organization Enable India under its national initiative CP Rise.
Addressing a press conference held today at the Chandigarh Press Club, CP Rise Consultant Chaitanya Mukund, who himself has Cerebral Palsy, told journalists that Cerebral Palsy remains one of the least recognized disabilities in India. Many individuals affected by this condition not only face neurological challenges but also struggle with other associated health conditions. As a result, their participation in society often becomes limited and they get fewer opportunities to express their concerns and ideas.
On the occasion, Soma Banerjee, Senior Manager at Enable India, said that keeping these challenges in mind, Enable India launched the CP Rise initiative. The program aims to empower persons with Cerebral Palsy to become self-advocates, leaders, and agents of change. It provides a platform that brings together persons with CP, their families, caregivers, professionals, and organizations to work towards building an inclusive community.
Jeeja Ghosh, Mission Leader of CP Rise, said that the meet-up is an opportunity for everyone to come together with joy and strength and move forward collectively. She added that when given the right opportunities and possibilities, persons with Cerebral Palsy can lead and achieve excellence in every field of life.
Speaking on the occasion, Amrita VS, Senior Executive at Enable India, spoke about Enable India’s journey so far and the organization’s efforts toward empowering persons with disabilities. She said the meet-up will be held at the Chandigarh Press Club, where persons affected by CP and their families will be able to share their experiences in a safe and inclusive environment, build networks, and learn from one another.
Chaitanya Mukund further informed that several interactive sessions will be organized during the program. Senior doctors from PGIMER, including Dr. Anuradha Sharma, Dr. Alka Sharma, Dr. R.S. Sodhi, and Dr. Arun Bansal, will share their views on various topics. These sessions will include subjects such as expression through AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication), mental health, muscle strengthening for wheelchair users, and adaptive photography using smartphones.
Earlier, CP Rise meet-ups have been successfully organized in cities such as Bengaluru, New Delhi, Kochi, Kolkata, and Mumbai, with the aim of developing a strong community support system for persons affected by Cerebral Palsy.
