Chandigarh: A 36-year-old patient suffering from a severe case of bilateral giant bullous lung disease underwent a successful pioneering surgical technique, modified uniportal video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) at Max Hospital,Mohali recently.
The patient was admitted in a critical condition with severe shortness of breath .He was bedridden for three months despite high oxygen supplementation. Diagnosed with bilateral giant bullous lung disease, he was advised to undergo a prohibitively expensive bilateral lung transplant. With oxygen levels persistently below 70%, the patient was disheartened after consulting numerous specialists across India.
Dr. Deepak Puri, senior director, CTVS at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali and his team, recommended modified uniportal VATS. This unique procedure, developed in-house, involves a cost-effective modification of traditional VATS to remove the air-filled bullae compressing the lungs.
The patient underwent left-sided uniportal VATS first, followed by the right side after a week. Post-operatively, he experienced a swift recovery, walking up to 6 km without breathlessness within a week. Following successful bullectomy and decortication on both sides, he now walks 13 km daily without any discomfort.
