Chandigarh: A state-of-art dedicated Motherhood Fetal Medicine Centre was inaugurated in Chandigarh today.
The centre will have fetal medicine specialists who are experienced obstetricians and are  not only qualified to do ultrasound like a radiologist to diagnose any disorder, but can also prevent and manage these conditions. This results in a more comprehensive and coordinated care under the same roof.
The center will be led by Dr. Poonam Garg, a reputed obstetrician of the region with almost three decades of experience in caring for pregnant women. Dr. Garg has successfully prevented Preeclampsia in high risk pregnant women through the use of sophisticated technology and advanced treatment. This has resulted in prevention of complications and better outcomes in mother and newborn babies.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Poonam Garg said,” Preeclampsia is a multisystem disease which affects around 10 percent of pregnant women. It causes maternal diseases like seizures, multi organ failure, persistent hypertension, Ischemic heart disease and brain stroke,”
She further said that babies born to mothers with Preeclampsia are at increased risk of prematurity, low birth weight, asphyxia and later on can develop heart disease and diabetes.
Dr. Garg explained that they screened around 500 pregnant women based on their past obstetric history, current medical factors like hypertension, obesity, diabetes, smoking etc. and then calculated their risk of developing Preeclampsia through advanced Ultrasonography equipped with sophisticated software.
“Around 40 women were identified at high risk and they were started on appropriate medication and advised lifestyle modifications. It was heartening to see huge success of this intervention, 38 out of 40 women did not develop Preeclampsia, saving them and their babies from risk of serious complications,”
