Chandigarh, March 18, 2023: The students of Montessori Lower Elementary of Vivek High School (VHS), Mohali staged their annual production -the evergreen musical drama ‘The Sound of Music’ at the auditorium of Vivek High School, Sector 38 Chandigarh here. The play was directed by Mr. Vikramjeet Singh Mamik, a passionate educationist who is also the Administrator of Vivek High School. The script of the musical was adapted by Mr. Mamik.
Around 90 buoyant children presented their oratory, singing, and dancing skills to precision, which left the audience mesmerized. The classic musical drama was presented in the backdrop of larger-than-life sets and realistic costumes designed for the production. There were two choirs - one of boys and the other of girls. The dances by students left the audience awe-struck.
It is to be noted that the classic play ‘The Sound of Music’ was a beautiful adaptation of the famous 1959 stage musical drama by the same name. It was composed by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II. An immensely popular American film - 'The Sound of Music' based on the musical drama was also made in 1965.
Speaking on the occasion, Vikramjeet Singh Mamik said, “The Sound of Music’ is one of the most beloved musicals of all time! It is based on the memoir of Maria Augusta Trapp, who served as governess to the seven children of the imperious Captain Von Trapp and brings music & joy to the household. The play conveyed a beautiful message of optimism and encouragement that we must go out and chase our dreams.”
Harbina Randhawa, Principal, VHS, Mohali said, “A whole lot of appreciation goes to our grade 3 students, who have put out in the story a beautiful message that real love can conquer grief, fear & hardship,”
Ms. Meenakshi Madaan, Head of Junior Wing, congratulated the students for their scintillating performance. She said that presentation is to develop in students the skills of creativity, communication, empathy, self-confidence, cooperation and leadership which can be applied in all the areas of learning. She also said that the play was a result of the concerted effort of Junior Wing teachers.
The directorial team included Ms Kulpreet Panag & Ms Kritika Dhiman.
Preparing the young learners for the play was a truly learning experience for the entire directorial team. The eight-year-olds effortlessly slipped into the characters & played them out confidently. The training went on for a span of two months and the hard work of the production team and children could be witnessed in the immaculate staging of the musical.
The iconic songs of 'The Sound of Music' - 'Maria', 'The Hills are Alive', 'My Favourite Things', 'So long farewell', 'Do Re Mi', 'Edelweiss', 'Climb every mountain' were sung by the students with aplomb.
