WORKSHOP TO BOOST INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY COMMERCIALIZATION IN PUNJAB

Chandigarh:A State Workshop on Intellectual Property Commercialization & Technology Transfer was organized by Punjab State Council for Science & Technology (PSCST) with support from Department of Science and Technology, Govt. of India. The Workshop held at Institute of Nano Science & Technology (INST), Knowledge City, Mohali served as a significant step towards transformative action required to commercialize the research being conducted at premier research institutions of state for economic gain.
During the inaugural session, Er. Pritpal Singh, Executive Director PSCST highlighted that Punjab has good number of patent filing but limited numbers are being commercialized to the Industry and Startups. This calls for development of a State Roadmap and hence this workshop is a step towards the same as it will help open dialogue between professionals from industry, academia and eminent tech-transfer agencies functioning at national levels to devise a way forward. He further emphasized that researchers need to come out of their labs and visit industry to understand their problem statements and develop technologies accordingly for ready adoption.
Dr. Dapinder Kaur Bakshi, Joint Director PSCST informed that the PSCST is setting-up IP Infrastructure in the State and has set-up 28 IP Management and Commercialization Cells (IPMCCs) in academic and research institutions of Punjab. These IPMCCs will act as Nodal Centers to boost tech-transfer in the State.
Dr. Nikhil Aggarwal, Managing Director, FITT Delhi spoke about the challenges in IP management and technology transfer, highlighting the importance of industry adoption to bring innovations beyond the lab. He emphasized that while technologies from academia often develop up to TRL 3, industries typically require TRLs 8-10. There is need to bridge this gap for enhanced transition of innovations from research labs to industry.
Dr. Amitava Patra, Director, INST, discussed the challenges faced by scientists and emphasized the need for deeper industry-academia collaboration to align research efforts with industry requirements. He highlighted that strengthening these partnerships is essential for seamless technology transfer and successful commercialization of innovations.
The workshop served as a platform where Researchers, IP Professionals and Tech Transfer Agents converged together to share best practices, models adopted across the countries and explore solutions for maximizing value of technology development and IP commercialization for the state based universities and research institutions. The workshop was joined by Mr. Lokesh Jain, Chairman, CII Ludhiana Chapter, Ms. Reema Sahni, Head, iTTO-FITT, Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Majumdar, Sr. Manager, NRDC-GoI, Dr. Prashant Kumar, Principal Scientist, CSIR-CSIO, Dr. Manu Sharma, Coordinator, Technology Enabling Centre, Panjab University and CA Abhishek Chauhan, Managing Partner, M.S Chambyal & Associates.
