Chandigarh: “Hepatitis, a liver inflammation caused primarily by viral infections, comes in several forms: hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E. Each type presents unique health risks, with chronic hepatitis B and C being particularly dangerous due to their potential to cause severe liver diseases such as cirrhosis and liver cancer,”
Speaking in a talk on World Hepatitis Day on Sunday, Dr. G.S. Sidhu, principal consultant gastroenterology at Max Hospital, Mohali said, “We have seen the profound impact hepatitis can have on individuals and their families. Despite advancements in medical research and treatment, hepatitis continues to pose a serious health threat,”
While emphasizing the urgent need for increased awareness, prevention, and treatment of hepatitis he said that World Hepatitis Day is a critical opportunity to inform the public about the importance of early detection, vaccination, and treatment.
Dr. Sidhu highlighted that hepatitis B and C often exhibit no symptoms in their early stages, underscoring the importance of regular screenings for at-risk individuals. Vaccination is the most effective preventive measure against hepatitis A and B. For hepatitis C, recent antiviral treatments offer the possibility of a cure and prevention of long-term health complications.
While advocating for lifestyle changes to support liver health, he said that a healthy diet, regular exercise, and avoiding excessive alcohol consumption are vital steps to reduce the risk of liver disease.
Dr. Sidhu also advised to take proactive measures for liver health.
Get tested, get vaccinated, and seek appropriate treatment if needed. Together, we can combat hepatitis and enhance the quality of life for those affected, he opined.
