UN Women Training Program conducted in Punjab in association with SEWA Punjab

Chandigarh, 21 November 2022: With the Objective to upskill 600 Vulnerable women and boost their access to economic and livelihood opportunities in Punjab, the Self Employed Women’s Association (SEWA) Punjab has come forward as an implementation partner for the UN Women program in Punjab.
As part of the UN Women program, SEWA Punjab recently organized a training session in Mohali at Phase 11 Laxminarayan Mandir. The objective is to sensitize the vulnerable and economically weaker women of Jagatpura area on Gender based violence and to upskill them in digital and financial literacy and entrepreneurship development, in order to provide the identified women. The Mohali training program was attended by 24 women, mostly domestic workers. This being the 4th such session organized in Mohali by SEWA Punjab.Similar trainings have been organised in Patiala, Nabha, Sanour, Gurdaspur, Malerkotla, Moga and Ferozepur districts by SEWA Punjab. In all 600 vulnerable informal sector women workers have completed this training.  

At the end of the sessions the participants were guided to make basic business plans for the work they wanted to start with access to support in rebuilding their lives.

Kanchan Mishra, Mohali Area Incharge, SEWA Punjab, said, “the UN Women program implemented by SEWA Punjab intends to aware and sensitize vulnerable women about gender based violence and help them to boost their economic and financial stability."

Anita behn, a participant who is a SEWA Punjab domestic worker member from Mohali and young mother of 6 had a major setback when her husband suffered from a paralytic stroke. It became impossible for her to manage the small shop he was running. Through the UN Women training program, she has been able to enhance her skills and capacity to run the shop and work towards expanding it.

SEWA Punjab’s work involves empowerment of the informal sector women workers and help the most marginalized have a voice and identity.
