Delegation of Tricity Bike Riders Union Meets Senior BJP Leader Sanjay Tandon

Chandigarh, September 21, 2026:  Office bearers and members of Tricity Bike Riders Union led by its President Sahil met senior BJP leader & member of BJP's National Council - Sanjay Tandon, to

discuss the difficulties being faced by bike-taxi riders in the tricity. The Union's delegation was accompanied by  Chandigarh BJP leaders Ravinder Thakur and Pradeep Yadav.  

The delegation apprised Tandon of issues related to challans, the impact of enforcement action on livelihoods of bike-taxi riders, operation of bike taxis and the lack of a clear mechanism for their registration. They said that a large number of riders depend on bike-taxi services to make ends meet and sought a practical and transparent framework that would enable them to continue working within the ambit of the law.

Tandon said, “The concerns of bike-taxi riders, particularly those relating to their livelihood and the absence of clarity regarding registration and operations, need to be addressed through dialogue and a practical approach. Those who wish to earn their living  by providing these services should have a clear and lawful mechanism to do so.”

Tandon said that he would speak with the competent authorities and press for a practical resolution to the problems related to challans issued to bike-taxi riders, a clear procedure for the legal registration of bike taxis, regular dialogue between riders, the union and the administration, early departmental discussions on issues affecting the livelihood of riders, and a clear and transparent framework for operating bike-taxi services in the tricity.

Tandon further said, “I have heard the concerns of the delegation in detail and will take up the matter with the concerned departments. There is a need for clear guidelines and a transparent system so that riders understand their rights and responsibilities and can work in accordance with the rules.”

The delegation also pointed out that enforcement action had intensified following the suspension of licences of major private app-based aggregators in Chandigarh. It cited reports of 231 vehicles being challaned and 16 vehicles being impounded between September 9 and 12.

The delegation also discussed the recently launched Bharat Taxi service in Chandigarh, which includes bike services and follows a cooperative model under which drivers can participate as members and stakeholders. The representatives said riders were willing to comply with applicable rules and wanted a legitimate and sustainable avenue to continue their employment.

Ravinder Thakur and Pradeep Yadav said they would also take up the concerns of tricity bike riders at the appropriate level and seek a solution through dialogue with the administration. Union president Sahil said the riders’ primary concern was their livelihood and future and that the union wanted to work with the administration to find a solution within the existing legal framework.
