Chandigarh: The five heart patients have undergone chronic total occlusion (CTO) procedures at Park Grecian Hospital, Mohali, including the patients who were considered unsuitable or high-risk candidates for bypass surgery.
One such case involved a 50-year-old male with triple-vessel coronary artery disease, who was presented with exertional angina, breathlessness and fatigue that significantly affected his routine activities.
The patient had previously sought medical opinions and was advised coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). However, due to his severe bronchial asthma, he was considered a high-risk candidate for surgery because of concerns regarding prolonged ventilator support and delayed weaning.
The patient underwent staged angioplasty in two sessions, including successful CTO angioplasty, resulting in complete coronary revascularization without bypass surgery, said Dr. Sankalp Sharma, associate director–cardiology at Park.
The successful CTO percutaneous coronary intervention provides an alternative or help postpone bypass surgery in appropriately selected patients considered at high surgical risk, said Dr Sharma.
However, it is not a replacement for CABG in every patient as treatment decisions need to be individualized, he informed.
