Speaking during a patient awareness seminar to create awareness on childhood and adult asthma at LIVASA Hospital , Mohali on Wednesday, Dr Suresh Kumar Sharma, director pulmonology said asthma affects 30 million Indians, and ironically less than 10 percent of patients receive proper treatment.
Myths prevent taking proper advice from a qualified pulmonologist or chest specialist, he maintained.
Dr Sonal consultant pulmonology said,” Asthma is genetic, lifelong, worsened by dust, smoke, stress, potentially causing fatal attacks. Symptoms of Asthma Include shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing and chest tightness,”
“Asthma is considered the most common chronic disease among children and is prevalent in all countries, whether they are developed or underdeveloped. In fact, over 80 per cent of asthma deaths, according to the World Health Organization occur in low and lower-middle-income countries,”
Asthma can be allergic, non-allergic, late onset, cough variant and obesity associated. Depending upon the type of asthma, the treatment in the form of immunotherapy, biologicals etc along with inhaler are advised, said Dr Goyal.
10 tips to prevent asthma:
1) Identify asthma triggers: allergies, smoke, pets, dust mites.
2) Stay away from allergens.
3) Avoid smoke of any type.
4) Prevent colds.
5) Allergy -proof your home.
6) Get your vaccinations done – flu shot.
7) Consider Immunotherapy allergy shots.
8) Take asthma medications as prescribed.
9) Follow your asthma action plan.
10) Use a home peak flow meter.
