Chandigarh: To create awareness on ‘Role of robotic surgery in gynecology’, a team of doctors from Park Hospital Mohali, addressed the media here on Thursday.
Present on the occasion were; Dr Preeti Jindal director robotic gynaecology surgery and Dr Vimal Vibhakar senior consultant general surgery and medical director PARK Hospital Mohali.
Dr Preeti Jindal said that Park Hospital Mohali now has the most advanced Da Vinci surgical robot and the latest 4th generation robotic platform.
“It is the next frontier for minimally invasive surgery and dramatically enhances the visualization, precision, control and dexterity of the surgical procedure by helping the surgeons in performing complex surgery in a manner that has never been experienced before,” Dr Preeti Jindal informed.
Dr Preeti Jindal further said “Surgical robots complement the expertise and experience of surgeons to the maximum. The robot-assisted arms are found to be more stable, precise, and can reach the innermost regions of the body more easily than a human hand. Therefore, this surgery ensures greater accuracy, enhanced motion range and better dexterity to surgeons. In addition, the 3D vision provided by the camera renders a more detailed view to the surgeon. It provides easier access and better surgical outcomes,”
Park Hospitals is North India’s biggest super specialty hospital network with 19 hospitals , 3500 beds, 800 ICU beds , 14 cath labs, 45 modular OTs and over 1000 doctors.
Dr Vimal Vibhakar said, “From patient’s perspective, the benefits of robotic surgery include precise surgical procedure with improved outcomes along with lesser blood loss. It additionally lowers risk of infection after the surgery, which leads to a shorter period of stay in the hospital. There is reduced post-operative pain. One can see that there is lesser scarring due to minimal incisions. If you are looking for a quicker recovery, then robotic surgery is the best way to go.”
In April 2005, DaVinci robot got Food and Drug Administration clearance for gynecological procedures based on preliminary evidence of safety and efficacy from their early experience with myomectomy and hysterectomy at the University of Michigan, informed Dr Preeti Jindal.
Robotics is best for single quadrant surgery and for fixed structures and hence is especially useful in gynecological surgery. It has added advantages of 3D perception, wristed instrumentation, intuitive movements and dexterity, she asserted.
About 60000 plus robotic surgeries are now performed every year in India, but there are less than 1000 trained robotic surgeons in India. Keeping this in mind Park Hospital is going to start training robotic surgeries for young gynaecologists, informed Ashish Chadha group CEO North Park Hospitals.
Robotic Surgery is going to be the future of gynecology. It leads to shorter hospital stays. The recovery from traditional gynecology surgery takes two months or longer, whereas recovery time in robotic surgery can be as little as half the length of traditional recovery time from open surgery, maintained Dr Preeti Jindal.
Within 24 hours a patient can be discharged from hospital and back to household work within 2 days and back to normal routine within 1 week, she remarked.
Park Hospital Mohali is now empaneled with ECHS, CGHS, ESI, Haryana and Himachal govts and all major TPA, corporates.
All kinds of robotic gynecology surgeries are being done routinely at Park Hospital Mohali.
Advantages of robotic gynecology surgeries:
Ø Ergonomically better than conventional laparoscopic surgeries
Ø Surgeon fatigue minimized using a console, where the surgeon sits and operates
Ø Fewer conversions to open surgery for surgeries for endometrial cancer
