Chandigarh: Doctors at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali, have successfully performed a high-risk, lifesaving living donor liver transplant on a critically ill 38-year-old man from Amritsar, offering him a new lease of life.
The patient, Mr. Davinder Pal Singh, a 38-year-old resident of Amritsar, was brought to Max Hospital, Mohali, in a very critical condition as he was suffering from end-stage liver failure caused by long-term alcohol intake. The patient had been experiencing yellowing of the skin and eyes, dark-coloured urine, increasing abdominal swelling, and persistent weakness. He had been admitted multiple times to different hospitals since August 2025, where he was treated for chronic liver disease. However, his condition continued to deteriorate, prompting his family to seek urgent specialised care.
After detailed evaluations at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mohali, by the liver transplant team, led by Dr. Kaptan Singh, Consultant – HPB Surgery & Liver Transplantation, it was determined that an emergency transplant was the only viable option to save his life.
Speaking on the case, Dr. Kaptan Singh, said, “The patient was suffering from end-stage liver failure when he reached us, making this an extremely high-risk transplant. Our multidisciplinary team worked round-the-clock to stabilise him and prepare him for surgery. In a remarkable act of courage and selflessness, the patient’s wife voluntarily came forward to donate a part of her liver. After thorough medical evaluation, she was found fit to proceed as a living donor.”
Dr. Kaptan, further said, “Post surgery, the patient was slowly taken off life-support medicines and breathing assistance, and is now recovering well under close medical care. The donor also recovered smoothly, highlighting the safety and success of the hospital’s living donor liver transplant procedures.”
