Experts demand to strengthen tobacco control policies and tobacco vendor licensing system in Haryana to save younger generation from tobacco trap

 Chandigarh.Nov.26,2021: Today Environment Sustainability Management (ESM) Cell of Maharishi Dayanand  University (MDU), Rohtak in collaboration with Delhi based Consumer VOICE organised tobacco control Webinar and poster making competition. The main purpose was to create awareness about the ill effects of tobacco and to discuss the measures required to save our young generation from tobacco trap.


 Speaking as Chief Guest, Mayor of Rohtak Shri Manmohan Goel, said that Tobacco use imposes enormous health and economic burden on the country. We will take all possible steps to ensure to ensure proper enforcement of tobacco control laws, especially near educational institutions.  He said that we need to have other machnisom like licensing mechanism to sell tobacco products and awareness campaign like this. 

Dr.Rita Kotwal,Deputy Director (Public Health) and State Nodal Officer NTCP, Haryana told about tobacco control activities under NTCP and said it is alarming that children and teens are lured towards the tobacco addiction. Strict implementation of tobacco control laws to save our children from tobacco addiction is need of the hour.

 Professor Ms. Rajesh  Dhankar, Co-ordinator ESM Cell, MDU in her welcome address spoke about ESM Cell and called upon for strong measures to control tobacco consumption among youth.

 Amarjeet Singh , Advisor-Project & Legal Consumer VOICE made a presentation about their study regarding tobacco sale near educational institutions, which found tobacco companies use the loopholes in laws to sale tobacco products, advertisements and marketing tactics to lure youth. He stressed about need to strengthen the tobacco control laws and implement tobacco vendor regulation system in interest of public health.

 

Haryana State -Key Study findings

·       A total of 58 point of sale were identified selling tobacco products within 100 yards of educational institutes in 2 cities surveyed in Haryana. (Rohtak 28+30 Faridabad)

·       In Haryana, 56.9% points of sale displayed tobacco products at the eye level of a child (about 1 meter high). In Haryana, 81.03% sold shops single stick cigarettes.

·       98.28% points of sale displayed cigarettes near candies and sweets to attract children.  Most of  point of sale have display and advertisements  of tobacco products to attract youths.

 Shri Gulshan Nijhawan, representing Vyapar Mandal Rohtak, said that Tobacco is one of the biggest public health threat to our kids and we support efforts to save children from the tobacco menace in Haryana.

 Webinar also has a technical session moderated by Dr. Rajesh Kumar Asst. professor MDU and webinar attended by more than 100 students. Mr Ashim Sanyal , COO, VOICE gave various good suggestion to strengthen on tobacco control. There was slogan writing and painting competition on the subject of tobacco control attended by 50 students before the webinar sessions and winner will be announced soon.
