Experts for strictly enforcing fire safety measures in buildings

Chandigarh, August 27, 2021: A fire-safety exhibition and seminar were organised by the Fire & Security Association of India (FSAI) here today. Chandigarh Mayor Ravi Kant Sharma inaugurated the program at Hotel Shivalikview in Sector 17 today. Experts from this region stressed on the need for strictly enforcing fire safety measures in buildings.

 It is pertinent to mention here that Fire & Security Association is a non-profit organisation established in 2002 representing the Fire Protection, Life Safety, Security, Building automation, Loss prevention and risk management domains.

 The mayor lauded the efforts of FSAI for creating awareness and sharing knowledge through experts about Safety and Security.

 Fire & Security Association of India (FSAI) is organising an Expo on 26-27-28 August, 2021 at in 27 cities, including Chandigarh. The Expo consist of online and offline stalls to exhibit products, materials and technologies related to Fire and Security sector. In addition to that, special lectures and panel discussions were also held.

 While delivering a talk on Disaster Management, Surinder Bahga, Head, FSAI Chandigarh Chapter stressed on the need to design earth-quake resistant structures. He further mentioned, “Many precious lives are lost every year in India due to lack of adopting fire safety measures in buildings. Concerned authorities must come out with policies and bye-laws which can be implemented on ground”.

 Speaking on the occasion through a video conference, Dr Manjari Khanna Kapoor, who is a doctorate in the subject explained, "Security by Design is a global approach to security and design in the millennium, being followed in most contemporary buildings and urban planning. It is a comprehensive approach to architecture and planning putting the focus back on 'built environment' as the primary instrument of defence and physical security”.

 Money Khanna, Project Engineer with PEDA, while giving opening remarks said, “FSAI has members from all over the country. FSAI is represented by 24 chapters in states”. He also delivered a welcome address.

 Prof Manujit Khurana, Professor at Indo Global College of Architecture, Abhipur spoke on Fire Safety and Security issues in tall buildings. She said, “The construction of high-rise buildings has revealed new problems to Fire safety. The peculiarity of architecture, which is covered in high rise, in fires creates a danger for a large number of people and reduces the possibility of their evacuation and rescue. To address these issues related to safe operation, stay and evacuation of people is the development of a fire protection system”.

 Building services consultant Anuj Agarwal conducted the panel discussion on “Healthcare, Hospitality and Homes: Emergency Preparedness”, and BS Sandhu, Fire Adviser to Punjab Government, Dr Risham Singla, Rajan Mittal took part in the discussion.

 Program was attended by more than 100 professionals including architects, engineers, builders and consultants, etc. An Award ceremony was also held on the occasion.
