Webinar on Medicinal Plants marks Earth Day celebrations

Chandigarh,April,22,2021:To spread awareness about Earth Day, the Environment Society of Goswami Ganesh Dutta Sanatan Dharma College, Chandigarh organized a Guest lecture on “ Present Status & Future strategies for the production of Medicinal & Aromatic plants”. The resource person, Dr. Meenu Sood from Department of Forest Products, College of Forestry, Dr. YS Parmar University of Horticulture & Forestry,  Nauni (SOLAN) gave a guest lecture to arouse curiosity about prospects of medicinal plants in the participants. Speaking on the occasion, she highlighted how the increased use of common medicinal plants can boost immunity among people. Most of the plants were the ones that can be grown in our houses even in pots or are found wild in some of the regions in specific seasons.

In nature no plant is a waste. Plants that are normally considered as weeds too have some medicinal importance. Strategies that are most important for their mass scale propagation were also discussed. Sustainable harvesting, following of good cultivation practices as per the guidelines issued by WHO for the medicinal plants need to be followed rationally. During the current prevailing conditions of COVID pandemic, the knowledge about these plants was highly appreciated by all participants.

The webinar was attended by 97 participants that included students and faculty from the college. The students enthusiastically asked questions related to plants that are stress busters, and can be used as alternative cure in day-to-day medical problems.

The Principal of the college, Dr. Balraj Thapar stressed upon the need of such knowledge sharing sessions that are important for the health and well-being of all.
